House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) stood by his tentative government funding agreement with Democrats amid right-wing pressure as he addressed reporters at the Capitol Building on Friday.
“Our topline agreement remains, we are getting our next steps together, and we are working toward a robust appropriations process,” Johnson told reporters.
Johnson’s defiance of the right flank came after he had meetings on Friday with his most vocal opponents, and after 13 House Republicans on Wednesday voted against a procedural rule in protest of his tentative government spending agreement with the Democrats.
“In keeping with my commitment to bring members into the legislative process, I’ve spoken and received feedback this week from many members all across the Republican conference. That’s a very important part of this,” Johnson said.
The Louisiana Republican added, “When I became speaker, I committed to decentralizing the speaker’s office and making this a member-driven process. That’s been part of this.”
