House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries slams Florida Supreme Court ruling allowing a 6-week ban to take effect.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) on Tuesday slammed the Florida Supreme Court ruling that will allow a six-week abortion ban to take effect in the state.

“Florida is now ground zero in the fight to protect a woman's freedom to make her own reproductive health care decisions,” Jeffries said at a House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee hearing in Broward County, Florida. “And as House Democrats, we are here to make clear that we stand with you to protect reproductive freedom.”

The Florida Supreme Court on Monday upheld the legality of the state’s 15-week abortion ban. The decision means a six-week ban that Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) signed in April last year can take effect May 1.

Jeffries also expressed gratitude to the committee’s witnesses for their advocacy and support during “this incredibly fragile moment here in Florida and across the country.”

“We are here today to all make clear our unwavering, unyielding, and unequivocal support for reproductive freedom because reproductive freedom is under assault. Today's hearing is incredibly important, particularly given the Florida Supreme Court's decision.”
