Former president Donald Trump, who is on trial in New York for alleged fraud in his real estate empire, has fought publicly with Letitia James, the attorney general who filed the lawsuit, and with Judge Arthur Engoron, who is overseeing the case.
He has called James a “racist” who “should be ashamed of herself,” and posted on his Truth Social social media service, “I have a Deranged, Trump Hating Judge, who RAILROADED this FAKE CASE through a NYS Court at a speed never before seen.” He has elsewhere called Judge Engoron a “political hack.”
For his part, Engoron, a Democrat, has not responded to the attacks, and has kept a tight leash over the former president during the trial, at one point fining him for violating the gag order on the courtroom, and threatening “far more severe sanctions” if it happened again.
Trump left the courtroom on Monday, and caught reporters outside. One asked “how’s it going,” and Trump made a gesture of zipping his lips, implying he was keeping silent.
