“Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves”: New Canadian PM Mark Carney goes after Trump.

Canada’s next prime minister, Mark Carney, sent a message to U.S. President Donald Trump after his victory in the Liberal Party leadership race to replace Justin Trudeau.

“America is not Canada. And Canada never, ever will be part of America in any way, shape, or form,” Carney said in his victory speech Sunday night.

“We didn’t ask for this fight. But Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves,” he added. “So, the Americans, they should make no mistake: In trade, as in hockey, Canada will win.”

“The Americans want our resources, our water, our land, our country. Think about it. If they succeeded, they would destroy our way of life,” Carney also said in his speech. “In America, health care is a big business; in Canada, it is a right. America is a melting pot; Canada is a mosaic.”

Carney also went after Trump by name, prompting loud boos from the crowd, and said the U.S. president has put “unjustified tariffs on what we build, on what we sell, on how we make a living.”

“[Trump’s] attacking Canadian families, workers, and businesses. And we cannot let him succeed,” the prime minister-designate said.
