Attorney General Merrick Garland confirmed that the Department of Justice is very concerned about reports of foreign actors, especially China, meddling in the midterm elections. Foreign actors meddling in United States elections is not new concern but came to the forefront with the presidential election of 2016. Back in 2016, the presidential election between former President Trump and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was thought to be the recipient of election meddling from foreign actors, especially Russia.

REPORTER: “There's been a report by META, parent company of Facebook, that there may be attempts by China to meddle in the midterm elections. Is that something that you're focused on or have you heard any specifics?”

GARLAND: “We have been focused on and there have been public reports from the intelligence community, not just China, but about interference by foreign nations in our elections starting back sometime ago and continuing all the way into the present. So yes we're very concerned about it.”
