Hillary Clinton and Kelly Clarkson on Monday emphasized the importance of voting while discussing Arizona’s 1864 abortion ban.
“There is so much voter apathy going on and that is why things like this are happening,” Clarkson said to Clinton in an episode of her talk show, “The Kelly Clarkson show,” that aired Monday. “What I'm hearing from everyone is that they're just exhausted and they feel powerless and ‘Even if I do vote, what does it matter?’ What does it matter? Well, that's why we're going back to 1864.”
“But what do we do about that?” Clarkson continued. “Because it's hard to preach at someone that you have to care about something. But at the same time, I feel like we're gonna end up in some kind of — not to sound dramatic — but some kind of Civil War over things that I feel like we shouldn't be divided on.”
“I think you're a hundred percent right and all I can do, as you just said, is to try to tell people,” Clinton replied. “For example, there was a vote in the Arizona legislature to try to repeal this 1864 law so that there could be a much more sensible approach and it lost. It matters who is representing you.”
Republicans in Arizona’s state legislature halted an effort by Democrats last week to repeal an 1864 law banning almost all abortions, after the state Supreme Court ruled it could go into effect.
