The U.S. House of Representatives quickly voted Wednesday evening to table Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's motion to oust Mike Johnson from the House Speakership.

In a 359-43-7 vote about 30 minutes after the Georgia Republican introduced her resolution, 196 Republicans and 163 Democrats voted to table it, while 11 Republicans and 32 Democrats did not. 7 Democrats voted “present.”

It’s unclear as of this writing whether Greene will attempt to introduce the motion to vacate again. She had met with Johnson twice this week and gave him a list of demands in order for her to back off.

Greene and fellow GOP Reps. Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Paul Gosar of Arizona had supported the move, meaning Johnson — operating with a small majority — needed Democratic votes to keep his job.

But their effort was always considered a longshot; former President Donald Trump has reportedly warned her against the move, as well as most Republicans, fearing potential blowback in a presidential election year. And House Democrats had promised to give Johnson the votes he needed to survive, as opposed to when former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was ousted in October.

Greene introduced her measure in part because she saw Johnson’s reliance on Democratic votes to pass some bills — including for $61 billion in aid for Ukraine — during his time as Speaker as a betrayal to conservatives.
